Labeling clothes for school — how to keep track at the start of term

School age is when children start taking responsibility for their own things. Here's how to label jackets, gym bags, and PE kit before the school year starts.

The start of the school year means new routines, new timetables, and often new clothes. It's also the age when children start taking responsibility for their own things — and where clear labeling helps the child, not just the staff.

School moves — and so do the clothes

At school, children move between classrooms, the canteen, the sports hall, the craft room, and the playground. Clothes come on and off several times a day, often in a hurry. It's no wonder jackets get left in the canteen and PE kit ends up forgotten in the changing rooms.

For older children, labeling is more about helping them recognise their own things in a pile — not about staff having to sort everything out.

Where things tend to disappear

  • The gym bag and PE kit. Forgotten after PE, end up in the wrong bag in the rush.
  • Jackets. Taken off at lunch, left on the chair, end up in the entrance hall.
  • Hats and mittens in the early grades. Dropped at break, put on the wrong hook.
  • Trainers and indoor shoes. Look like other kids', easy to grab the wrong pair.
  • Water bottles. Not a piece of clothing, but the same principle.

Outdoor days and school camps

On outdoor activity days and school camps, clothes come on and off in larger groups, in temporary changing areas. Those are the moments when the most garments go missing at once — so make extra sure the jacket, the rain trousers, and the boots are all labeled before the day.

Label for your child's sake, not just your own

When the jacket has the child's name visible on the care label:

  • The child can pick out the right jacket from a pile in the hallway
  • Classmates can return something they accidentally took
  • Staff don't have to act as the middleman

Stick-on labels for care labels are a fast way to label everything before the first day of school — no tools, no extra steps.
