Labeling clothes for preschool — how to avoid lost mittens

Mittens, hats, and spare clothes go missing easily at preschool. Label everything clearly from the start so you don't have to chase down lost garments come spring.

The first day of preschool is a big deal — for both children and parents. In the middle of all the new routines, it's easy to miss something seemingly small: labeling the clothes. But in a preschool setting, it's the labeling that decides whether winter's mittens will still be around come April.

Preschool's particular laundry challenge

Small children change clothes several times a day. Outerwear on and off for every activity. Indoor shoes off, slippers on. And when things get messy — a fresh change from the spare clothes drawer.

Staff help many children at once, often with similar overalls and mittens in the same size. Without clear labeling, it's nearly impossible not to mix things up.

What goes missing most often

  • Mittens and hats. Top of the list, every year. Dropped on the playground, end up in another child's drawer.
  • Spare clothes. Jumpers and trousers that were in the drawer but end up in the wrong place after a change.
  • Slippers and indoor shoes. Look alike, easy to confuse.
  • Socks. Disappear in the wash, both at home and if the preschool washes anything.

Label before the first day

When all the clothes are labeled from the start:

  • Staff can see straight away whose mitten is whose
  • You as a parent don't have to dig lost clothes out of a pile of identical ones
  • Other parents can return things they accidentally took home

For preschool age, it's not about the child being able to read their own name — it's about the staff and other adults being able to read it when 25 overalls are hanging in a row in the hallway.

The easy way

Stick-on labels attach directly to the care label and take a few seconds per garment. No tools, no sewing, no iron — which is a relief when you're standing with a pile of 30 garments the week before preschool starts.
